The Woodland Public Library Literacy Service was started in 1985 through the California
State Library Literacy campaign. Our literacy service teaches adult learners basic
reading and writing skills. The learner works with a trained volunteer tutor. Most tutoring
takes place at the Woodland Public Library, 250 First Street, Woodland, California, but we
do have other sites in the community and the county (For example, Esparto Public
Library.)
The Families For Literacy program (FFL) is also funded by a grant from the California
State Library. Woodland Public Library's FFL program was started in 1995. The
program's purpose is to introduce the adult learners and their children to the value and
pleasure of reading as a family. Tutors help to accomplish this task by encouraging the
adult learners to read to their children. To be eligible for the FFL program, the adult
learner must have a preschool-aged child under the age of five in the family, and be
receiving adult literacy instruction from the libraiy, or be on the waiting list. The learner
may be a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or anyone who is the primary caregiver of the child.
All members of the family, not only the preschooler, become part of the Families for
Literacy program and are encouraged to participate. There are three main components to
the program:
l. The adult learner meets with the tutor on a regular basis and receives literacy
instruction and training in selecting and reading children's books aloud. FFL
activities and instruction are a part of every tutoring session.
2. Quality gift books are selected and given to the adult learner to help build a home
library for each family.
3. FFL storytime are offered at the library to provide enjoyable activities for the whole
family.
