Is someone you know exhibiting some signs and symptoms of depression or suicide?

How do you know?

Warning Signs

  • Personality changes
  • Withdrawal from family, school, friends, hobbies
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Neglect of personal appearance
  • Sudden mood changes
  • Reckless behavior
  • Giving away belongings
  • Talking about death or suicide
  • Acquiring a weapon or lethal means for suicide
  • Self-harm actions

What can I do if someone I know is showing one or more of these warning signs?

  • Talk to them. It is a myth that talking about suicide will “put the idea in their head.”
  • Talk to a trusted adult.
  • Call your local crisis line.
  • Get the person help, like a therapist or school counselor.
  • Encourage the person to reach out to professional counseling services or a crisis line.

What if I’m not sure if they are suicidal? What if it’s an emergency and I don’t know what to do?
