In general practice, and specifically in the General Plan update, will you support measures for pedestrians and cyclists on par with those used for automobile traffic?
I strongly support investing in bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements to maintain and enhance our walkable and safe streets. As a young father having to push a stroller and at the same time hold my other young daughter’s hand, I understand the difficulty in getting around safely on our streets, walking paths and parks. I am proud of our history as a bike friendly town-- Davis recently won the first ever platinum award by the League of American Bicyclists--and I intend to continue and enhance that tradition when elected to the City Council.
As the City Council considers future development proposals, we also need to ensure that they include walkable neighborhoods with wide sidewalks, tree shading, and safe bicycle paths connecting to shopping and community facilities. All of this helps reduce traffic congestion while improving street safety and air quality. Any new development should include plans for connecting bicycle/walking paths across different parts of the community. Use of tunnels and overpasses is appropriate. In particular, I support east-west bike connections so that our children do not have to cross busy streets to get to schools and parks.
