UCD grad joins City Council race
Environmental lawyer Mike Levy hopes to connect with students

The city of Davis now has another candidate running for city council in June with the launch of Mike Levy's campaign.

Levy, an environmental lawyer for the state of California and an alumnus of UC Davis, announced his candidacy Friday at Central Park in front of family, friends and supporters.

Levy began his speech addressing the crowd with some of his background information in the Davis community and also regarding the issues he hopes to bring more attention to if elected. A major issue he cited includes connecting with students and providing them with a voice in the city's legislative process.

Vanessa Robinson, committee and press chair of Levy's campaign, said she thinks Levy will be a good person for the position because he possesses good resources and is able to identify what issues citizens of Davis feel are important.

"Levy has broad-base experience that allows him to be a true advocate for the students and residents [of Davis]," Robinson said.

Sheryl Patterson, co-coordinator of the planning committee of Levy's campaign, said she has worked with Levy on neighborhood issues in the past and that he is well qualified for city council. She said that she doesn't consider other candidates running against Levy to be as qualified.

"[Levy] has more experience and will make the best decisions possible," Patterson said. "He knows how to address the myriad of issues [in the city], and his opponents may not be ready."

During his speech, Levy spoke of ties with the university and Davis community. He was a longtime member of the Cal Aggie Marching Band-Uh, is on the current board of directors for the alumni association and is a Rotary member.

Regarding city issues, Levy said he is interested in promoting slow growth, a balanced budget and the improvement of public services.

"Davis has the capacity to and should set the standard for open space, environmentally sustainable development, and agricultural and habitat preservation," Levy said.

Levy also said he is interested in partnering with student organizations in order to spread the word of his campaign and increase the amount of students involved in city politics. He noted he is still connected with the UC Davis population and is always available to speak with students.

"I think students should be engaged in city affairs and come talk to me about issues," Levy said. "As well, people who care about the students are encouraged to participate."

For the time being, Levy said he will continue to hold public events that will publicize his campaign to a range of community members. He said he will be doing all he can to reach out to students and residents alike, and have a successful candidacy.
