Mike Announces He's Running For City Council

Mike announces he'll be a candidate.

Good Morning, Friends,

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Mike Levy, and I’m running for City Council.

I’m running because I want us to plan Davis’ future, together.

Davis is a wonderful city with a warm and engaged community. I came to Davis in 1984 as a Political Science major. I graduated in 1988, when I went to law school. After law school, I met my wife, Elisa, who was a music major at UC Davis. We started dating after she graduated in 1993. We’ve both remained very close to Davis through our friends, and through volunteer activities with the University. When I was offered a job at the State Water Resources Control Board, we didn’t even have to think about where we wanted to raise our family— Davis was home. We now have one child, our daughter Sarah, and our next daughter is due in March.

I’ve long been engaged in community activities and public service.

  • I’ve participated in mentoring programs for inner city high school students with the bar association, and fundraising efforts for scholarships and other causes at UC Davis.

  • I worked as president my neighborhood association to ensure neighbors have a voice in city issues that affect them.

  • I help our city minimize its environmental footprint as Vice Chair of the Natural Resources Commission.

  • I facilitate resolution of legal disputes as a court mediator, and resolve litigants’ issues as volunteer superior court judge.
I’m ready to take next step, to serve you as your council member.

I bring a balanced perspective to the issues facing the Council. My professional, volunteer, and family experience has taught me the values of cooperation, moderation, and inclusiveness. As a court mediator, I am trained to listen to others’ concerns and work to craft solutions that address them. Public participation is the cornerstone to effective representation. Our elected officials must seek and respect input from the community, and respect its citizens’ ideals. These values are critical in this election, since the next Council will design the process to update the General Plan, and as we balance our city’s budget.

Planning is the key to environmental sustainability. I will work to ensure that Davis plans its future—that it grows slowly and carefully, only after broad citizen input, and with respect for our existing neighborhoods. As an environmental lawyer working for the public, I work to protect California’s resources every day. I will devote those skills and my expertise to Davis’ resources. I will work to ensure Davis sets the standard for open space, environmentally sustainable development, and agricultural and habitat preservation.

I will work for tolerance and civility in our community. I will engage citizens with diverse perspectives, and help foster mutual respect among people of different backgrounds and different points of view. Respectful differences of opinion are not just healthy—they generate ideas that make our decisions better, and educate us so that we can …

Together we can plan our future.

Please support me for City Council this June. Thank you very much.
