Dear Friends:
I am running for the Davis City Council and am asking for your help in electing me on June 6, 2006. I hope to continue my long-term commitment to public service and the Davis community by serving as your Councilmember.
We are at a critical time in planning for Davis’ future. The City’s structural deficit is interfering with our ability to fund many of our most cherished assets that we often take for granted. The Davis economic base needs buttressing so that we can support and enhance our prized city services, including fire and police, parks and greenbelts, and give attention to our infrastructure.
I bring a balanced perspective to the issues facing the Council. My professional, volunteer, and family experience has taught me the values of cooperation, moderation, and inclusiveness. I listen to others’ concerns and work to craft solutions that address them. Public participation is the cornerstone to effective representation. Our elected officials must seek and respect input from the community, and respect its citizens’ ideals. These values are critical in this election, since the next Council will design the process to update the General Plan.
I have deep roots in this community. I was a student at UC Davis from 1984 to 1988, graduated in Political Science. As students, my wife, Elisa (a 1993 Aggie alum) and I recognized Davis as a wonderful and unique place, and so we returned to Davis in 2000 to raise our family. We have two daughters, Sarah, who is two and half, and Rachel who was born in March.
I have a long record of volunteer experience and leadership in civic affairs, at both the neighborhood and city levels. I was the Chair of the 2004 Governance Task Force that recommended a series of changes in how Davis City Government does business. I am currently the Vice Chair of the Natural Resources Commission, which advises the Council on all of Davis’ environmental issues. I helped form and served as president of the Grande Neighborhood Association in North Davis before moving to Mace Ranch. I serve on the board of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, and was President of the Cal Aggie Marching Band Alumni Association.
As a result of my activities, I am familiar with the issues facing Davis neighborhoods, including infill and peripheral growth, establishing and maintaining parks and green space, affordable workforce housing, and vibrant neighborhood commercial centers. As an environmental attorney with the State Water Resources Control Board, I work to protect California’s resources every day. If elected, I will work to protect the natural resources in and around Davis as well.
I will work hard to be an effective representative for all of Davis. I ask for your support during the upcoming campaign, and the years of service to follow. Please take a moment to complete and return the contribution form, and send whatever amount you may be able. I welcome your help with my campaign. Please contact me at 759-1156, or mikelevy@pacbell.net, if you have any questions.
With gratitude,
Mike Levy
