"This is the first time we've seen the lines drawn in such a transparent fashion," Saylor said. “In the past, they've been defined through sheer political interest by the legislators themseves, and no one really knew how (the districts) were constructed." ... more

A safe, diverse, reliable water supply is critical for public health, economic viability and vitality of our communities, safe habitat downstream, and the health of our agriculture industry. The surface water supply project will ensure that water resources are available for both municipal and agricultural uses, with the least possible environmental impact. Many regret the missed opportunity to obtain surface water from Lake Berryessa when it was available nearly 50 years ago. We must act now on Sacramento surface water to ensure we don't face similar regrets in the future and even greater costs. Plainly put, it is our generation's turn to make the right choice and invest in a secure water future for our communities. ... more
Press Release from Yolo County Children's Alliance | July 5, 2011
Thousands of people in Yolo County are on edge hoping the recession will end before they lose their jobs or homes. Hundreds of children are going without some of the most basic comforts because their parents haven't been able to make ends meet. They are in need of food, diapers, health insurance and shelter. Sometimes the stress is too much and a home becomes violent. ... more

First mentioned was economic development, and Saylor promised to continue his work with Designing a Sustainable and Innovative Davis Economy (D.S.I.D.E.), the development think tank jointly founded this past fall by the Davis City Council, the Davis Chamber of Commerce and UC Davis.... Supervisor Saylor then moved on to talk about the need to share services among the county and the communities within it.... A third focus for Saylor as a supervisor will be maintaining as much as possible the safety net of social services Yolo has provided its less fortunate and neediest citizens ... more

Saylor won the seat in June. However, he knew voters would elect him in March when the deadline for an opponent to enter the race came and went without a challenger.
He's studied ever since, attending board meetings, touring the county's 1,021 square miles with different supervisors, peeking into some of the county's myriad departments.

If you have been flipping through your local cable channels looking for the Davis City Council, you may have noticed we are not to be found on Channel 16 in August. Each year, the Davis City Council takes a recess for the majority of August. Nevertheless, there is much to report on the activities to date of the 2010-12 edition of the Council. We are off to a great start and are getting down to the business at hand. The purpose of this brief article is to share some highlights of the progress to date. ... more

We know Don well and have worked with him on many issues since he became a Davis school board trustee in 1995. Since then, he has impressed us with his tireless energy and strong commitment to making our community a better place. We especially appreciate his ability to listen to the many varied perspectives in a city where strongly held opinions often clash and finding common ground is difficult. Don treats people with respect and always works toward a positive solution.
Don Saylor's problem-solving approach will serve us well. Yolo County faces tremendous challenges in maintaining an acceptable level of service amid severe budget cuts resulting from the economic recession. We believe Don is the right person for these times. ... more

There are calls of duty, and there are higher callings - Don Saylor's political career may be a little of both. His campaign to become a Yolo County Supervisor - like all his other campaigns - is the result of a calling; the call to be an active leader, to brand the unique Yolo County identity and to sustain the accountability and balance brought to the county by the previous Yolo County Supervisors. So with the help of his family and a deep-seeded commitment to public service, Don Saylor is running for the Yolo County District Two seat... more

Aaron Saylor, 28, would have been the youngest member in recent memory to serve on the City Council in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Despite his loss in Tuesday's runoff election, Saylor, a first-time candidate for public office, said he believes his campaign made a difference in motivating the young people in his community to get involved in government... more

... Don Saylor must be one of Davis's most active public citizens. As he said in the letter announcing his candidacy, "Working for you is a high calling for me." Beyond his long service in elected office, first as a school board trustee, and currently as a member of the city council since 2004, Saylor gives his time, energy and brains to a number of local and statewide organizations working to improve governance of our state, county and city. In July, he hosted the Yolo County Leadership Summit in Winters that brought together over 60 senior officials from the county and all of its cities and school districts. The purpose of this historic gathering was, Saylor said, "to carry the message that we can't go on like this," citing the ongoing state budget crisis that's forcing "service cuts that are leaving people in our community without a safety net." He said the summit also focused on structural issues that are making the state harder and harder to govern, notably the two-thirds majority votes required in the legislature to pass budgets and tax increases... more
