The mispronunciation of the word
'nuclear'
is a growing source of irritation to many people.
It may be indicative of a psycholinguistic syndrome
proliferating in the Nuclear Age.
For some unexplained reason,
presidents and presidential candidates,
cabinet members, generals and high ranking officials,
nuclear agency leaders and anti-nuclear activists,
artists, actors, authors,
residents of Three Mile Island, Hanford, and the Diablo Canyon
area,
ordinary people
and some of our neighbors, best friends and relatives
say
'nucular'.
The 'nuclear issue' is a serious and complex one.
Can people make intelligent, responsible decisions about something
that many of them cannot even pronounce.
nuclear ( noo! kle-er ) adj.
nucular ( noo! kyoo-ler ) ?
