"… it was outstanding! I sat there thinking that anyone who believes that public education is in trouble should have been sitting in that room. It's a perfect example of the good partnership  between the DSAF and the (public) schools."

- Joan Sallee, past president of the Davis School Board, after watching a play, "The Golden Goose," performed by Barbara Carver's Fourth/Fifth/Sixth combination class at Birch Lane Elementary School, March 2000.

inancial Commitment. . .

The DSAF is an all volunteer board with operating costs limited to printing, postage and bank service charges. Over 90% of the money raised goes directly to the public schools of the Davis Joint Unified School District. The DSAF commits to raising $18,000.00 annually, $16,000.00 is matched by the District dollar for dollar, and $2,000.00 for 'in-kind' services.

Of the total $36,000.00, more than $23,000 is used to support elementary "Site-Grants"; covering costs for art supplies, Artists-in-Residence and music programs (chorus, strings orchestra, bands etc.). This may seem like a substantial sum of money for the arts, but in the 2006-2007 school year, elementary enrollment in the DJUSD was at 5,100. It figures to little more than $6.00/per child for the entire school year.

$10,000 of the joint DSAF/DJUSD funding budget is allocated for K-12 grade classroom Hershberger Grants. The maximum allocation for these grants is $300.00 for individual teachers and $600.00 maximum for combined teacher's visual and performance art projects.

The DSAF administers the Harmony In Our Lives benefit concert proceeds, along with new funding from the Brunelle Music Group, to fund the new upcoming Brunelle Harmony Choir Program. This program will fund elementary school choral groups and help to support performance art with a concentration on vocal programs.

Additionally, in a unique partnership with the ArtsBridge Program of the Margrit Modavis Arts Center, the DSAF has designated a special $5,000 annual fund to provide matching grants for ArtsBridge programming. The DSAF ArtsBridge Residency Grant program will provide 8 matching grants annually, one for each of the 8 elementary schools within the DJUSD.

In past years, DSAF also worked in partnership with the Watermelon Music Store, to administer The Watermelon Music Gumball Grants that supported music education in the Davis public schools.

Between the Harmony & Brunelle funds, the Watermelon Gumball and the DSAF Hershberger Grants, $16,000.00 was added to the support of the arts in our public schools each year. It is amazing to see our gifted teachers fuel the imaginations of our fabulous students. The proposals themselves say much about the visual and performing arts as both a medium of expression and a vehicle of learning. Credit belongs to our teachers, administrators, and individuals and businesses in the community.

ow can you help?
The greatest part of our $18,000.00 commitment comes from membership contributions. In addition to membership, funds are raised through annual fund raising events: the Harmony in Our Lives Benefit Concert, the Home For The Holidays Concert, and the Young at Art! Festival.

After over 25 years of service, the DSAF has set an endowment goal of $500,000.00 to ensure its annual commitment to the Davis school district. A $100.00 tax-deductable donation from you would get us well on the way to that goal, but any amount you are able to send is also greatly appreciated.
