2010 saw several new CDs with John Tchicai.
The first one is a tribute to Thelonious Monk and is called "In Monk's Mood". Accompanied by George
Colligan on piano & B3 Hammond organ, Steve LaSpina on bass and Billy
Drummond on drums, this cd features John's striking sound on alto sax
interpreting the works by Monk. Available via Steeplechase 31675.
The second one is a release of New York Art Quartet-recordings from the
'60s, when John Tchicai and Roswell Rudd, trombone, did a European
tour
with Finn von Eyben on bass and Louis Moholo on drums. It is released by
Cuneiform Records under the title "Old Stuff", named after a composition by Rudd. Available as Rune 300.
The third one is called "Reptiles in the Sky" and this is bassist Peter Danstrup's creation. Recorded in
2008, an ensemble of 5 hornplayers plus a trio of saxophone, bass and
drums plays 9 original Danstrup-compositions and 2 collective
improvisations. Tchicai is the main soloist. Danstrup's music is
characterized by tight arrangements with an intriguing balance of
traditional jazz and contemporary dissonance. Available as DANPETCD 01.
The last one is called "Truth lies
in-between". In a collage of instrumental improvisations,
compositions and John Tchicais orchestrations of poems by John
Stewart, this 12-track hybrid of genres (Jazz through Techno) gives
jazzpoetry a new form. Tchicai recites, plays alto saxophone and Indian
flute,
Margriet Naber plays piano, synthesizer and sings and Ernest Guiraud
Cissé plays kalimba, congoma, balafon, tom toms and conga. Available as
HTE MARGE 01.
How can one compare John Tchicai's music with Jackson Pollock's paintings?
